Wooden icon of the Life-giving Spring Theotokos (Zoodochos Pigi). The icon and its elaborate framing constitute a single piece of wood. The scene is organized below an arched frame. Virgin is emerging from a round water fountain in the iconographic type of “Platytera”. She is depicted frontal and with her arms open, bringing in front of her in circle the young Jesus who is blessing. Four angels are framing her while being portrayed in a worship pose; two of them are holding a bejeweled orb representing the world. The water falls from the two-level fountain to the square basin around which groups of patients get crowded to drink some water. The crowd consists of people with different social origin; on one hand, crowned figures and officials portraying gold garments, whereas, on the other, poor figures in ragged attire, like the group which is depicted on the lower first level. The icon’s wood-carved gilded framing with the distinctive Baroque style consists of two columns that support the curved arch with the vegetal decoration. On the upper part of the icon, two winged cupids hold a flower and a crown. On the background of the entire representation, a city surrounded by walls is discerned. Eptanisian workshop.
