Virgin Mary the Glykophilousa

Post-Byzantine period (18th cent. A.D.)

The Virgin is holding Christ on her left side, resting her face with tenderness upon his own. Christ has put his right arm around his mother’s neck, while holding her right hand with his left hand. The Virgin is wearing a scarlet himation, a light-blue handkerchief and a light-blue dress; Christ is dressed in a white-grey tunic and a yellow himation. The background is gold. The icon is surrounded by wood-carved frame with elaborate Renaissance decoration. On both sides of the frame two full-length angels are portrayed in a worship pose; on the upper part, two reclined back-to-back figures holding the Amalthia horn and surrounded by vegetal ornamentation are also depicted. In the lower section, two cherubs holding fish are visible while two other, mounted, figures also appear on the edges.
