Temple cross

Post-Byzantine period (17th cent. A.D.)
W: 8.50 cm H: 13.00 cm

Cross from the crowning of a temple architrave. It terminates in trefoil edges at the arms, with a foot-stool at the supporting part. At the four terminals the revealing symbols of the evangelists are depicted and in the centre the Crucifixion. The artwork obviously comes from areas of Crete or of the Ionian Islands under the Italian occupation.
