White ground alabastron

Classical period (470 - 460 B.C.)
H: 15.80 cm RIM: 4.30 cm

The vessel's belly is coated with white slip, on which two figures are painted in delicate black lines. A maenad is rushing towards the right, looking behind her, holding a thyrsos in her right hand. She is wearing a long chiton and an obliquely draped himation with voluminous folds. The hair is enclosed in a snood and crowned with a stephane; she is also wearing a necklace. A second male figure is partly preserved on the right, holding an unidentified object in his hand. The terracotta alabastra, vessels containing fragrant oils, imitate the shape of the real Egyptian alabastra and were usual grave gifts.
